2010 Gold Coast Guineas Final Field & Preview

May 6th, 2010

This Saturday the excitement of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival moves to the Gold Coast where a great eight-race programme will light up the track including the $125,000 Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m).

A capacity field of 16 three-year-olds plus four emergencies has been announced for Saturday’s Carlton Mid Gold Coast Guineas with a number of the early favourites struck down with horror barrier draws.

Winner of the 2009 Golden Slipper, Phelan Ready is one such runner. The Jason McLachlan-trained More Than Ready gelding has struggled to perform as a three-year-old after winning the most prestigious two-year-olds race last season.

Phelan Ready has drawn barrier 19, and if none of the emergencies gain a start, will jump from barrier 14 as he attempts to regain his form.

Other highly rated three-year-olds who suffered in the barrier draw include the Chris Waller-trained Stryker and Bart Cummings’ Latin News, who will start from the two far outside barriers.

Fastnet Rock colt Stryker has had just one win from his 11 career starts to date, but is coming off an eye-catching fourth in the Group 1 Galaxy (1100m) last start and should be refreshed after a three week break.

Latin News was impressive last start when taking out the Gosford Guineas (1200m) and will again be ridden by big race specialist Blake Shinn on Saturday as the Hussonet colt attempts his fourth win from just seven career starts.

Other Gold Coast Guineas hopefuls include locally trained gelding Tierqualo (barrier three) coming off two successive wins, improving Lonhro filly Deer Valley (barrier five) and the Gillian Heinrich-trained Swiss Rose (barrier eight).

Noticeable absences from the nominations include the Peter Snowden-trained Launay and Magic Millions 3YO Trophy winner Graceful Anna. Graceful Anna will instead start in the more-suitable $150,000 Listed Silk Stocking (1200m) on Saturday.

The scheduled highlight at the meeting is the $300,000 Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) featuring last start Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Road To Rock.

The 2010 Carlton Mid Gold Coast Guineas will take place as race six followed by the Hollindale Stakes as race seven.
