Miss Cover Girl No Certainty for 2015 Gold Coast Guineas

April 23rd, 2015

Trainer Kelly Schweida saddled classy filly Miss Cover Girl to a career-best victory to date last start but has revealed he is yet to make a decision as to whether or not she will run in Saturday’s Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m).

Finishing outside the first three only twice through her eleven career starts, Miss Cover Girl jumped from the gates well in the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) on Day 1 of The Championships at Randwick; taking up the pace early and leading from start to finish to hit the line half a length ahead of closest rival Peeping.

Having been allocated the wide and awkward barrier 14; likely to cut into barrier 12 following the removal of emergencies, Schweida told AAP he is pleased with the condition of the Monashee Mountain filly but is wary of the conditions of the track ahead of the 2015 Gold Coast Guineas.

“I gave her a freshen after the Sydney run and she is well,” Schweida said.

“But at her previous start at the Gold Cost she jumped out well and then got caught deep before finishing midfield. I don’t want the same thing to happen.

“It is very hard to get cover at the Gold Coast because they go along so hard and I don’t want her having a gut buster.”

Schweida confirmed the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) to be run on the Gold Coast will likely figure as Miss Cover Girl’s major target this season but will use her season’s results to dictate the path taken.

“It is a long way off and I want to nurse her through the winter. I will have a good think about it before we make a decision (about the Gold Coast Guineas),” he added.

Posting a total of seven wins and two minor places, Miss Cover Girl stamped her claims as one to watch through the 2014 Brisbane Winter Carnival; winning three metropolitan sprints in succession before finishing a close second to Traveston Girl in the Breakfast Creek Hotel Handicap (1200m) on July 12th.

Having won the IPG Connect BM65 (1200m) and placed fifth in the Pointsforhope At Jupiters Plate (1400m) leading into her PJ Bell Stakes triumph, Miss Cover Girl is currently tied-favourite with Time For War to win the 2015 Gold Coast Guineas with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
